Setting your freelance writing rates 💰
Not all writing is created equal.
Happy Fridaaaay folks,
All I want to do now is just 💤
I am looking forward to this holiday.
2020 has been some year – I am sure you’ll agree 😷
So today, we’ll be riffing about “Setting your freelance writing rates”
First off, there’s no right or wrong answer to this topic.
Some freelancers are paid $1,500 per article.
And some others get paid $0.03 per word.
Your rates depend on:
The type of writing you do – such as technical writing or non-technical writing.
And, your experience.
Here are 3️⃣ things to consider when setting your freelance writing rates:
1️⃣ How experienced are you?
You shouldn’t expect to be paid $450 per 1,500 words if you have never written for any client in your life.
Your first clients will probably lowball you. And that’s 🆗
Your first gigs are an opportunity to build your confidence, get some writing samples, and testimonials.
Once you have that under your belt, ⬆️ your rates.
2️⃣ Type of writing
Not all writing is created equal.
Technical writing and white papers tend to pay more than product reviews or meta descriptions.
3️⃣ Your writing niche
At the start of your freelance writing career, you are likely to be a generalist.
Niche down fast.
Because you won’t be able to earn the sort of 💵 writers with a niche earn.
I haven’t. But I am learning the hard way that you need to find a niche fast.
Niching down also builds your brand.
However, some niches pay more than others.
For example, a finance writer will probably earn more than a food reviews writer.
Here’s a freelance writing rates guide I shared at a presentation some weeks ago

All the best folks.
My biggest takeaway this week 🚀
A colleague shared this piece of advice with me. I paraphrase:
“If you’re going to do nothing, indulge in the feeling of doing nothing. Like really enjoy it instead of thinking I could be doing XYZ instead. Then, you’ll come away from actively choosing to do nothing feeling refreshed instead of slightly guilty.”
And that’s how I plan to approach this holiday.
What I’m thinking about?
If you want to do more, you have to commit to less.
Thanks for reading this far. I am grateful!
This newsletter will be going on a short break till the 8th of Jan. 2021.
