Content distribution roles??

Hey everyone,

Good week? Charged and ready to take on the new month?

It’s getting cold here. Seems we are going to have a Frozen kind of winter.

But I’ll be sure to make the best of it.

At least, my first kid will stop pointing out that it’s still daytime when we ask him to go to bed.

Now, to the business of the day.

Can I get hired to run content distribution?

Seeing that we’ll be chatting with the brilliant Ross Simmonds on Saturday, today’s newsletter is all about content distribution.

While collating the questions for Ross, the above question cropped up a couple of times.

And while Ross will give you all a much detailed response on Saturday, the simple answer is YES!

The ideal modern content team (sort of the one I am currently building at UserGems 😀) is made up of four roles:

  • Content strategist: sets the tone

  • Content creator: creates/writes the content

  • Content optimizer: makes sure the content is set up to succeed once published

  • Content distributor/promoter: distributes the content

You can read more about these content marketing roles in this Foundation Co blog post.

So how do you set up yourself to get hired for a content promotion specialist role?

Simply put, the content distribution specialist helps the client put the content where it belongs: in front of the client’s target audience.

However, this is a skill set that is still evolving.

And if you want to set yourself apart, here’s what I would start doing with my own content (experimenting with your content is always a great place to start):

  • Start learning how to find subreddits your target audience frequents

  • Practice sharing content and engaging with Redditors within these relevant subreddits

  • Practice finding Quora questions your content answers and then craft a response that links to your content

  • Practice engaging with those who respond to your Quora post

  • Learn and practice finding relevant LinkedIn groups, and then sharing your content in there with a relevant comment that drives engagement

  • Practice using HARO and B2B Help a Writer to find journalists or other blogs seeking quotes (this is a great way to get a backlink)

  • Learn how to conduct social audits that pinpoint where the client’s target audience hangs out online and the format in which they consume content

  • Practice setting up promo accounts on various social channels and use them to share content in relevant groups or subreddits

Practice this for six months and I might just hire you if you can show me some interesting results!

I also hope I just provided you’ll with ammo to ask Ross Simmonds more questions on Saturday.

Content tools

A content tool I discovered this week

Slofile is a website that lists public Slack groups you can join. It’s a great way to find communities where your target audience hangs out.

Not Enough Writers

One of the hardest things to track or attribute is the effect of dark social on your content marketing efforts. It's also probably why some of the best distribution tactics seem a tad manual.

On Saturday, we’ll be chatting with Ross Simmonds about content distribution efforts that help you make the best of “dark social”.

What is dark social: Dark social describes the “invisible” shares that happen through channels like messengers, but also email and text messages.

Content writing jobs (Remote/Freelance)

All the best folks. Please share with any of your friends/colleagues who might find this useful. 🙏🏾

My biggest takeaway this week 🚀

These six questions and writing rules of George Orwell is genius:

What I’m thinking about?

Make folks around you better without taking the credit and you can’t help but be successful.
