How to Write: Quotes From Famous Writers on Writing - Owlcation

Hello 👋

How’s your week going?

Mine has been remarkable.

Cancun was amazing. Isla Mujeres (a private island 15 minutes away from Cancun was mindblowing).

I head back to Canada tomorrow — the land of -9°. The temperature here (25°) reminds me of Nigeria.

Today, I’ll be sharing 8 random things I have learned in the past two weeks

  1. Cut the first 300 words when writing. You are probably still finding the lede of the article during this period.

  2. Before you edit your draft, scan first. Readers scan. And you’ll spot if the article has a logical flow from headline to sub-headlines to the conclusion.

  3. Reddit, Answer the Public, and Amazon Reviews are a goldmine. Your readers are sharing their pain points on these channels. These are also great places to mine for the voice of the customer.

  4. Use more images on your blog. Google seems to favor blogs with 7+ images with traffic and links. Readers also spend more time on the page (and Google loves when readers do that).

  5. A reader starts reading a piece because of the content. But often bounces to another article because of your writing style.

  6. Use specific nouns when writing. They increase the reader’s interest. And give your writing character and life. For example, ‘the bulldog’ instead of ‘the dog.’

  7. Statistics should be sprinkled across your article like salt, not smeared like mayonnaise.

  8. A word your reader doesn’t know or understand is a waste of space. Use familiar words.

My Biggest Takeaway this Week

What I’m Thinking About

Bad habits reward today. And frustrate tomorrow.

Thanks for reading this far. I am grateful!

Be good out there. If you can't be good, be careful.

I’ll be back on 3/11.
