3-2-1 Fridays: Image SEO, a mobile tech. SEO audit checklist, and content cannibalization

Welcome to today’s issue of Efikó, a weekly newsletter by me, Dozie Anyaegbunam, focusing on content marketing, writing, social strategy, and living your best life. THANK YOU for being here! I appreciate you!

Hey everyone,

How are we doing?

It’s been a beautiful week- May started her new job on Wednesday. And she’s enjoying it so far, from the look of things.

By the way, I need your help with my email deliverability. It seems my newsletter now lands in the “Promotions” tab.

Would you mind moving it to the “Primary” tab? Here’s how to do it.

3 Things I learned This Week

i.

Gone are the days when images were a checkbox you ticked off when creating content. Considering Google Images account for 22.6% of internet search volume, we need a deliberate approach to image SEO.

Here’s a sneak peek of some of what I’ll be implementing at UserGems in the coming months with image SEO:

  • Descriptive alt text: It’s not enough to use only the keyword. Use the keyword to create a descriptive sentence and use it as the alt text. For example, instead of “best sales books,” I would use “one of the best sales books for sales managers.”

  • File size: Use compression software to ensure all images are less than 100KB.

  • Turn on lazy loading: You can read all about lazy loading here. But a short, sweet answer is — you only load images when the reader needs them, such as when they scroll down to the section with the image. This significantly improves page speed. If you plan on doing this, don’t use lazy loading for images above-the-fold (I don’t need to tell you why right?)

ii.

People, last time on 3-2-1 Fridays, I mentioned that Google considers the mobile version of your website a priority these days. Here’s a checklist you can follow to make sure the mobile version of your site is 👌🏿

  • Is the menu bar easy to access on mobile?

  • Can you read the text without having to pinch the screen?

  • What’s the loading speed of your site on mobile? Google recommends a load time of 5 seconds or less on 3G connections.

  • Are the images and other elements laid out correctly, or do they feel cluttered and out of place?

iii.

Google reintroduced indented search results sometime last year. This means that content cannibalization isn’t such a bad thing anymore. Indented search results allow Google to show searchers additional pages from your website it thinks are relevant to the search query.

So when should you worry about content cannibalization and start planning to delete one of the pages?

If the two posts rank for the same search intent and keyword, it’s time to remove one or collapse both into one article.

2 Things I am Thinking About

i.

It’s okay to feel negative emotions. We are humans, after all. What’s not right is allowing those negative emotions to keep us from improving our lives.

ii.

Boredom is necessary. It’s not an opportunity to start something new. But one you can take to optimize what you’re already working on.
