3-2-1 Fridays: Competing against established websites, keyword research, and two hacks for building domain authority

Welcome to today’s issue of Efikó, a weekly newsletter by me, Dozie Anyaegbunam, focusing on all things content marketing and living your best life. THANK YOU for being here! I appreciate you!

Hey everyone,

The past nine days have been rough.

Dodo has been ill. From pink eye…to an episode of heat exhaustion…to a viral infection that took us to the hospital.

But it looks like things are getting back to normal. He’s finally sleeping through the night without throwing up. As for Ronan, he’s being Ronan.

Still waking up by 2 a.m. to demand food.

Kids!!!!!!

But the content must be content. So LFG!

3 Things I learned This Week

i.

Yes, Google’s information gain update means upstarts now have a chance against established websites.

But hold on!

This doesn’t mean you should go head-on against the bigger websites YET. Always consider the following before you start competing for a keyword/topic:

  • Use the site search operator (site: URL keyword) to see how many pages your competition has written on that topic. If they have thousands of pages with that keyword, that’s a hella lot of topical authority. And you’ll find it hard to outrank them for that topic.

ii.

When we talk about keyword research, we often sound like you MUST start from scratch. To which I say:

You shouldn't start from ground zero if it isn’t a brand new website. Your first move should be to find out what keywords Google already associates with your business.

To do this, Google Search Console (GSC) is your best friend.

So, before you start generating new keywords, focus on building different content formats that satisfy the intent associated with the keywords Google associates with your business.

Precious Oboidhe explains how to find these keywords in this brilliant LinkedIn post. I would only add that you always don’t need to drill down to the keywords ranking for the ten spots on the SERPs.

Remember, building topical authority means you cover topics you want to be known for from all angles, formats, and search intents.

Note: This assumes you rank for keywords associated with your business or audience.

iii.

Two hacks that help you build authority:

  • Add author bios

  • And include the publication date. Especially when you update the article.

About to test these two out. I'll let you all know.

2 Things I am Thinking About

ii.

Happiness is:

  • Finding a sense of purpose

  • Building

  • Working towards a goal

  • Overcoming challenges

But you need money sha. Don’t let them deceive you.

1 Book Recommendation

I started reading Maddy Osman’s Writing for Humans and Robots some days ago. And it’s a great great read on something I have been thinking about a lot these days —- building a premium content experience for your audience.
