Hullo, 👋

How have you been?

This week's weather has been like, how about you have sunshine for breakfast, rain for dinner, and maybe some flurries for dinner.

Plus, I spent the week briefing writers.

And by Thursday, I was dreaming of keywords 😅

But enough about me. How has your week been?

3 Things I learned This Week

i.

The 3C approach to content is an easy way to ensure you don’t find yourself endlessly spinning on the content hamster wheel. Think of your content strategy this way:

  • Cornerstone content: You create this quarterly. This could be an ultimate guide. Or a course. Or original research.

  • Core content: This you create monthly. And it isn’t fresh content. You pull out ideas from your cornerstone content and expand on them. These can be your podcast episodes, blog posts, videos, and webinars.

  • Cut content: You create these daily. And promote the core and cornerstone content. They can be social posts, short-form videos, infographics, email series, etc.

Boom. You have a content strategy. Obviously not that easy, but you get the point.

ii.

Combining your topic clusters and keyword research is a great way to show some big SEO wins to your stakeholders. To do this, you’ll need to:

  • Map out five pain points of your buyer persona

  • Turn these pain points into topics. And under each topic, write down subtopics that are related to the main topic

  • Dive into your keyword tool and find keywords (long tail, related, etc.) that map to each main topic and its subtopics

  • Create a content calendar and map your content to your buyer persona’s pain points

  • Start creating, optimizing, and distributing content on each subtopic and main topic.

Then, sit down and wait for the results to come in. ⚠️ It takes at least three months.

iii.

Should you write for humans or the Google bot?

There’s no perfect answer. But here’s one that comes close to perfect.

When starting, optimize for the bot first. Optimize your alt texts, meta descriptions, headers, people also ask questions, etc. Heck, even use those misspelled keywords in your meta descriptions and alt text.

2 Things I am Thinking About

i.

Success comes from doing somewhat-monotonous things every day for years - but no one wants to hear that.

Dickie Bush

ii.

Success and failure are the accumulation of seemingly insignificant choices over a long period. Compounding is either working for you or against you. The gains or losses are too small to see until they’re too large to ignore.

Shane Parrish
